The TD812's Tuned Dipolar Array? technology represents a
major step forward in low frequency pattern control. Rather
than employ oversized horns, the TDA? uses the natural cancellation
properties of spaced acoustical sources to provide
off-axis attenuation along the vertical axis.
In the TD812, four pairs of woofers are used two pairs of
8-in woofers spaced within two pairs of 12-in woofers. The
distance between each pair is calculated to produce a figure
eight polar pattern, with cancellation on the axis between
centers, at a certain frequency. Below this frequency, which
occurs when the distance between the woofers is equal to
1/2 wavelength, the pattern gradually changes to omnidirectional.
When the distance between cones equals 1/4
wavelength, they combine acoustically and act as a single
point source.
Active crossover filters allow each woofer pair to operate
only in the transition region between omnidirectional radiation
and the figure-eight pattern. For the outside pair, this
occurs at lower frequencies than the inside pair, which are
closer together. The overall effect of this design is approximately
10 dB of attenuation along the axis between cone
centers, occurring over a broad 2 1/2 octave range.
APPLICATION
The TD812 is a powerful tool optimized for use in large-scale
permanent installations. Mounted above a microphone location,
it will provide high-impact LF coverage over a large
seating area without the LF ??stage wash associated with
high output LF devices. This allows for maximum gain before
feedback from Microphones as well as a quieter, more
pleasant performance area.
TDA also minimizes LF reflection off of acoustically reflective
ceilings. This is particularly useful in highly reverberant
applications like indoor sports arenas.
