In the summer of 2000, Pinnacle Systems introduced the world to a new generation of
production switchers with the release of PDS 9000. Never before had any manufacturer truly
integrated DVE and switcher functions into one product. Not content with merely offering
DVEs as an option to the switcher, Pinnacle Systems made them part of the M/E architecture,
just like a wipe system in previous generations. DVEs (nine, in fact) were liberally sprinkled
into the system – the idea being to eliminat...

...ea being to eliminate the idea of delegating DVE channels tofunctions. If you were likely to want to use a DVE in the system, a dedicated DVE was placed
in the system – each keyer has its own DVE, which processes video and key for that keyer. If
you need a DVE, you use it. If you don't, you don't use it. DVEs were added to the transition
system, so you can now page turn a background, just like you wipe it. No delegation required
– each M/E has its own DVE, dedicated to that purpose. And these aren't just 2D “size and
place engines: each DVE has rotation with perspective, warps, shadows, slabs, defocus etc.
The same approach was taken with framestores. The PDS 9000 has 19 of them: each keyer in
the system has a pair of framestores dedicated to it – one for video, one for key. Each M/E has
a framestore dedicated for holding masks for that M/E. There are even 2 pairs available as
primary sources, enhancing the customer's still image capability.
A year later, Pinnacle Systems launched the PDS 6000, aimed at giving this level of video
processing to customers with tighter budgets and limited control room space. With all of the
processing power of its bigger brother , but one less M/E, the production community
welcomed the PDS 6000.
Video processing, however, is only half of the battle. Today's production environment has
significant demands in terms of graphics playout, both still and moving. Recognizing our
customers' needs for integrating graphics into news, sports, and special event programming,
Pinnacle Systems has again redefined the production switcher by introducing the PDS 9000i
and PDS 6000i at NAB 2002.

Video Switcher
Video switchers, also known as a video display controller (abbreviated to VDC) is essentially the key component of a video signal generator. This kind of vision mixer is used for generating a visual signal in computers, and in some cases an audio signal too, although this is just a secondary function. The video switcher first made its appearance in our homes in the first types of home computers, such as the old Commodores and Spectrums, and is now an integral part of video signal generator logic. A video mixer cannot work alone however, as it needs support from various other parts of the computer to work. For example, pixel data is stored in the computer’s RAM, while character fonts are held in the ROM. Therefore, the video switcher chip will usually be totally integrated into the main computer, and so users will be able to see the video RAM it gives in the CPUs memory map. It can also act as a co-processor that acts independently, although this is not usually the case. The video switcher is generally available in three different formats. Video shifters are the most basic type of production shifter, and take care of the video timing signals. These obtain data one byte at a time from the CPU, and use synchronization signals to produce a video signal. The CTRC video switcher reads data directly from the computer’s RAM, and this is then outputted either through a ROM or directly. Far more complex are video interface controllers. This kind of video switcher supports sprites and video RAM which is dedicated towards color attributes, thus making extremely high-resolution images possible. Used PDS 6000i Switcher For Sale
