Stage Platforms

Platforms are generally used in conjunction with a thrust stage or an open stage during live concerts, and allow for different levels on the concert stage without having to actually adjust the stage itself. Often, a combination of many platforms will be used during a concert in order to provide a platform that covers a greater area or is higher, according to the desires of the performer. There are three main kinds of platforms used on a thrust stage. The cheapest and easiest to assemble are the rigid wooden platforms, which come with detachable legs and can be adjusted to reach various different heights. These platforms can come in all kinds of irregular shapes, although the usual format is a 2 foot by 8 foot platform. Stressed skin platforms are considered to be much stronger and sturdier than rigid wooden platforms, as they are covered with two sheets of plywood instead of just one, making them more flexible. These are naturally more expensive, as they use various different sized pieces of wood in their construction, according to the designated size. Some even use honeycomb paper in their construction. These platforms need to be made with a great deal of care and attention, so that the strength and stability are maintained. The last type of platforms used on an open stage or a thrust stage are the rigid steel-tubing platforms which are made of extremely rigid 1 ½ inch, 16-guage steel tubes, and are designed for bearing extremely heavy loads. These platforms can use various covering different materials, and their spacing and consequently, their load bearing ability, will depend on the size of these coverings.
