PAR lighting refers to a special kind of lamp that has become a mainstay of the theatrical and concert lighting industry. PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector, and is appreciated for its intensely powerful light beam and its relative low cost. As well as theatre, PAR lighting is also frequently used in concerts and movie production, as it is capable of producing the substantial flat light that is often required in many scenes. Also called PAR cans or PAR lights, PAR lighting is basically a single, intense beam of light that is housed in a very simple, can-shaped unit. It works in much the same way as an old fashioned car headlight works – the spread of the beam usually cannot be adjusted, unless the actual lamp is changed, and the reflector is an integral part of how the PAR lighting works. PAR Lighting is particularly popular with low budget concerts, thanks to their affordability, their ease of use, high light beam intensity, easy maintenance and long-lasting nature. One popular trick employed during concerts is to pair the PAR lighting with smoke machines and direct the beam of light through the smoke, making the light beam visible for neat yet cheap special effects. PAR lighting generally produces an incredibly intense, oval shaped pool of light.
