Color Scrollers

Color scrollers, also known as color changers, are a kind of stage lighting equipment that is used by operators to remotely alter the color of light beams projected by various stage lights in theatre, concert and studio venues. Essentially, color scrollers are machines that are able to place various different colored gels, or dyed polyester materials, into the path of the beam of light being projected. The scroller is generally fitted to the end of lighting fixtures, and so it doesn’t actually interfere with the mechanics of the light beam itself, but rather the light beam simply passes through it and takes on the color of the gel being used. There is a variety of different color scrollers used in stage lighting. The most common type are single string scrollers, which are fitted with just one color string. Dual string color scrollers have two strings of colors to allow for basic CMY mixing. The most advanced type are CYM color-mixing scrollers, which are fitted with three independent gel strings and allow for more fluid changing of colors by the operator. Color scrollers come in a range of different sizes, and can be mounted on almost any kind of stage lighting fixture. Sizes range from 4 inches at the lowest end of the scale (mainly for PAR 36 fixtures) all the way up to 30 inch color scrollers. There are also larger format color scrollers available, which are used for ETC Multi-PAR units. Control of most color scrollers is usually achieved through a DMX512 protocol, although the RDM protocol is also used for some more modern color scrollers.
